Its 32 areas, their layers and the wiring between them come from anatomy measured in macaque monkeys, assembled into one spiking network.
The multi-area model of macaque visual cortex was published in 2018 by Schmidt, Bakker, Hilgetag, Diesmann and van Albada. It covers 32 areas of one hemisphere, from V1 up to the frontal eye field and prefrontal area 46, with an excitatory and an inhibitory population in each of layers 2/3, 4, 5 and 6. At full scale that is 4.13 million neurons and 24.2 billion synapses. How many cells each layer holds comes from neuron density counts; how strongly the areas project to one another comes from retrograde tract tracing in macaques (Markov et al. 2014). This runs 2% of its neurons, 82,614 of them, each keeping a tenth of its synapses, scaled by the model's own rule. The neurons are leaky integrate-and-fire units: rest −65 mV, threshold −50 mV, 10 ms tau.

The cursor is the gaze, and it comes back out of layer 5: the cells that project to the superior colliculus, which turns a place in the visual field into an eye movement.
